Paying Too Much for Medicare Part B or Part D?

If your Medicare premiums went up because of a past spike in income, you may be able to request a reduction using Form SSA-44 after a qualifying life-changing event.

We Can Help You Understand the SSA-44 Process

Medicare Plan Assistance helps seniors review their situation, understand what documents may be needed, and prepare to request a lower IRMAA when applicable.

What Is IRMAA?

IRMAA stands for Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount. It is an additional amount some Medicare beneficiaries pay on top of their regular Medicare Part B and Part D premiums because their reported income was above a certain level.

The problem is that Medicare usually looks at older tax information. That means your current Medicare premium may be based on income from a prior year, even if your income has now dropped because you retired, stopped working, reduced your hours, lost a spouse, or experienced another major life-changing event.

Important: If your income is now lower because of a qualifying life-changing event, you may be able to ask Social Security to use more recent income information instead of the older tax year.

Do Not Keep Overpaying Without Checking Your Options

A short review may help you understand whether Form SSA-44 applies to your situation.

What Is Form SSA-44?

Form SSA-44 is the Medicare Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount Life-Changing Event form. It is used to request that Social Security review your IRMAA because your income went down after a qualifying life-changing event.

This form may be used when you received a notice that your Medicare Part B or prescription drug coverage premiums include an income-related monthly adjustment amount and you experienced a qualifying event that may reduce your IRMAA.

Life-Changing Events That May Qualify

You may be able to request a lower IRMAA if your income dropped because of one of the following life-changing events:

Marriage

Divorce or Annulment

Death of a Spouse

Work Stoppage

Work Reduction

Loss of Income-Producing Property

Loss of Pension Income

Employer Settlement Payment

Not every income change qualifies. Social Security makes the final decision. Medicare Plan Assistance can help you understand the process and prepare your information before you contact Social Security.

Who Should Call Us?

You should consider calling Medicare Plan Assistance if you recently received a Medicare premium notice and your Part B or Part D costs are higher than expected.

Common Scenario

You sold a business, worked overtime, received a one-time payout, or had unusually high income in a prior tax year. Now you are retired or earning less, but Medicare is charging you a higher Part B or Part D premium based on that older income.

If your income dropped because of a qualifying life-changing event, Form SSA-44 may help you request that Social Security review your premium.

How the SSA-44 Process Works

The process can feel confusing, but it becomes easier when you know what information to gather and what Social Security is reviewing.

Review Your Medicare Premium Notice

First, confirm whether you are being charged an income-related monthly adjustment amount for Part B, Part D, or both.

Identify the Life-Changing Event

Determine whether your income dropped because of a qualifying event such as retirement, work reduction, divorce, death of a spouse, or loss of pension income.

Estimate or Document Your Lower Income

Form SSA-44 asks for income information such as adjusted gross income and tax-exempt interest income for the more recent year.

Gather Supporting Documents

You may need documents showing the life-changing event and your more recent income. This may include tax returns, employment records, pension notices, or other supporting documents.

Qualifying events may include marriage, divorce or annulment, death of a spouse, work stoppage, work reduction, loss of income-producing property, loss of pension income, or an employer settlement payment.
