Humana and UnitedHealthcare are two of the largest Medicare Advantage companies in the United States, but choosing between them usually requires looking much deeper than the company name.
Neither Humana nor UnitedHealthcare is automatically better. The correct comparison is your Humana plan options vs. your UnitedHealthcare plan options using your doctors, medications, hospitals and expected healthcare usage.
HUMANA
UNITEDHEALTHCARE
UnitedHealth Group accounts for about 26% of nationwide Medicare Advantage enrollment in the 2026 KFF analysis, while Humana accounts for about 20%. Together they represent roughly 46% of Medicare Advantage enrollment nationwide.

For 2026, Humana reported offerings in 46 states and Washington, D.C., covering about 85% of U.S. counties. Its portfolio emphasizes HMO/PPO options, prescription coverage, dental, vision, hearing, SilverSneakers, SNPs, Part B reductions on certain plans and spending allowances on qualifying plans.
For 2026, UnitedHealthcare reported Medicare Advantage access for about 94% of Medicare-eligible consumers and a network of nearly 1 million providers. Depending on location, UHC plans can include HMO, HMO-POS, PPO, Part D, dental, vision, hearing, Renew Active, UCard, giveback, D-SNP and C-SNP.
AARP is not the insurer, and AARP membership is generally not required for AARP-branded UHC Medicare Advantage.

OTC, food, utilities and other qualifying uses depend on the specific plan and eligibility.
Don't choose your medical insurance primarily because of a spending card.
Provider access, prescriptions, hospital coverage and medical cost-sharing should usually be evaluated first.

Your current plan can change even if you do nothing.
Neither company is universally better. The better choice depends on the specific plans available in your county, including provider networks, prescription coverage, copayments, maximum out-of-pocket limits and supplemental benefits.
UnitedHealthcare reports a Medicare Advantage network of nearly one million providers for its 2026 offerings. However, national network size does not tell you whether your individual doctors participate. Always check the network of the specific plan.
AARP-branded Medicare Advantage plans are insured by UnitedHealthcare or its affiliated companies. AARP is not the insurance company. You generally do not need to be an AARP member to enroll in an AARP-branded UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plan.
It depends on the plan. Both companies offer Medicare Advantage plans with dental coverage. Compare covered procedures, annual limits, coinsurance, provider networks and whether services such as crowns, dentures or implants are covered.
For 2026, UnitedHealthcare has a higher nationwide enrollment-weighted CMS Star Rating than Humana. However, CMS ratings apply at the Medicare contract level, so the plans available in your area may have different ratings.
Both offer $0-premium Medicare Advantage plans in many areas. National 2026 analyses show a higher percentage of Humana plans with $0 premiums, but actual availability depends on your county.
Some Medicare Advantage plans from both carriers offer a Medicare Part B premium reduction or giveback. The amount varies by plan and location.
It depends entirely on your medications and pharmacy. Compare each plan’s formulary, drug tiers, prior authorization requirements, deductible, copayments and preferred pharmacy network.
Carrier name alone does not determine this. PPO plans may provide greater out-of-network flexibility than HMOs, but you should confirm out-of-state provider acceptance, routine-care rules and cost sharing before enrolling.
You can change Medicare Advantage plans during certain Medicare enrollment periods, including the Annual Enrollment Period from October 15 through December 7. Other enrollment opportunities may apply depending on your circumstances.
There is no responsible nationwide answer to “Is Humana or UnitedHealthcare better?”
UnitedHealthcare leads the national Medicare Advantage market by enrollment and has the higher enrollment-weighted 2026 CMS rating. Humana compares favorably on several national cost measures and has a broad Medicare Advantage footprint.
The better question is: Which specific Humana or UnitedHealthcare plan gives me better access to my doctors, hospitals and medications while keeping my expected and worst-case healthcare costs acceptable?
